This year, I successfully conquered the night before Sinterklaas, Christmas Eve and the last few days before the summer holidays. My good night's sleep wasn't put at risk by test week. (That's to say, I fell asleep the moment my head touched the pillow.) I even had my rest while coping with illness, school paper worries and essay related stress.
But just now, I felt like that seven-year-old again, waiting for the hours to pass until the night would finally be over, so that her birthday could start. It's the same hot, humid weather all over again. The seconds seem just as unwilling to tick away. I remember lying in bed awake, eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling. Changing sides every five minutes just to quicken the process of falling asleep.
Ten years later, and it feels exactly the same. The fan hasn't yet been installed in my room (which I'm going to fix the minute the other people in this house will get up) so there's no rescue for my sleeplessness this time. The trick with putting my feet under my pillow, my head at the foot of my bed & falling asleep because of the amazement of how different your rooms looks if you change your point of view - it doesn't work anymore.
Luckily, I realised that now I've got my very own laptop, and some people who are willing to sacrifice their sleep surfing around on the Internet and keeping me company. Finally I found a way to get through the night until my eyes get sleepy and my thoughts calm down.
Ah, the blessings of growing up. At least I found one.
